Mules on the C&O Canal, Cumberland Maryland

We took a drive to Cumberland in Maryland, and discovered this fellow (sculpted by Antonio Mendez) standing outside a tall brick building.

Inside the Visitor Centre, displays and information celebrated the men and boats and mules that kept the Chesapeak & Ohio canal working in years past. Many of the exhibits are geared toward to kids, and our kids had a wonderful time here.

We left the Visitor Centre to walk along the canal, and there, to our surprise, we found a memorial to the Irish workers who died working on the C&O Canal. Many of them would have immigrated at the time of the Great Hunger.

You can read more about the C&O Visitor Centre here.

I'm just loving your views of this country, Susan.

It's amazing how much of our country's history is dependant on animals! We couldn't have made it this far without them. Nice to see they are remembered and honored for their contributions.

Susan: I wish I had known you were in WV. I have spent a lot of time there this summer. I will also be there in early August, too. Are you enjoying it? How is it you are spending so much time there? Loved the pictures of Weston. I visited there earlier in the summer.

I read your blog some and have landed here through the wonderful bell post from monastery daily photo!
